The actual ability to exchange of the information from one member
to other in an Information Exchange is called semantic
interoperability. In an Information Exchange, semantic
interoperability cannot be proprietary. It must be based on
industry standards.
The Object Management Group (OMG) has developed the Model Driven
Message Interoperability Standard (MDMI) Standard to provide
semantic interoperability to and from any message format. The MDMI
standard is an open specification that results in a machine
readable map for a message that can be developed and distributed
by anyone, ranging from standards organizations (e.g., SWIFT, FPL,
ACORD, or HL/7) to the Service Provider. Software vendors and
large organizations can also use MDMI for their messages as a way
to reduce the cost for message introduction and maintenance,
increase quality of message processing with a repeatable, well
vetted process, and provide this process for internal and external
compliance requirements.
FireStar Software was a leader in developing the MDMI Standard,
along with others such as SWIFT and VISA. We are co-signers of the
standard along with IBM, Unisys, and VISA. The OMG MDMI Standard
is an open, freely available specification for a machine readable
“message map”. FireStar has an implementation of an MDMI that has
been used by participants in the OMG MDMI Consortium to build and
test MDMI maps. This is now available as the FireStar Appliance
for MDMI Maps.
The FireStar Appliance for MDMI Maps can take MDMI maps and move
information from source messages to target messages simply and
efficiently, without coding. FireStar has also implemented the
Standard in our EdgeNode technology.
In our design of our FireStar Appliance for MDMI Maps, FireStar
recognized that large corporations, software vendors, and software
middleware vendors have significant investments in their message
processing infrastructure. To meet the need of these organizations
to support the MDMI standard in a timely and cost effective
manner, FireStar designed our FireStar Appliance for MDMI Maps as
a software module that can be integrated into any existing message
processing infrastructure.
For those needing to create and modify OMG MDMI Compliant Maps,
for both standard and proprietary messages, FireStar offers the
FireStar Editor for MDMI Maps.
